Shooting Incident Near Indiana University Injures Nine

Early Sunday morning, two men opened fire during a large gathering close to Indiana University in Bloomington, resulting in injuries to nine people, according to authorities.

The shooting took place around 12:25 a.m. on East Kirkwood Avenue, near a Five Guys restaurant, as police were already monitoring a crowd estimated between 2,000 and 3,000 attendees celebrating the annual “Little 500” bike race.

Police reported that the chaos began with a conflict between two women, which escalated when others joined in and began pulling weapons. “During the fight, several individuals displayed handguns, and we believe two separate shooters fired their guns,” noted Bloomington Police Chief Mike Dieckhoff during a press conference. “As the situation unfolded, people started fleeing and officers rushed in to assist victims.”

Five victims were struck by gunfire or debris, while others sustained cuts and abrasions in the rush to escape.

The victims ranged from 17 to 22 years old, all women, as per police reports. “Most were treated and released, but one person was hospitalized and is currently in stable condition,” Dieckhoff added. “We are currently reviewing cell phone and surveillance footage from nearby businesses.”

Interestingly, none of the victims were students at Indiana University, and it remains unclear what motivated the shooting. “The shooter was a male,” Dieckhoff confirmed.

He emphasized that this incident was not random, describing the rally preceding the shooting as peaceful. “We will keep investigating and will share updates regarding the young woman still hospitalized, along with any new leads that come up,” he mentioned.

Every year, law enforcement prepares extensively for the “Little 500,” an event that draws large crowds from across the country. “We aim to communicate that guns and violence are unwelcome, but everyone is invited to come and enjoy themselves,” Dieckhoff stated.

Bloomington’s Mayor Kelly Thomson expressed her sorrow over the violence, calling it an “incredibly sad day” for the community. “We firmly oppose gun violence in any form, and our thoughts are with those who were injured,” she said.

According to Indiana University’s information, the “Little 500” is known as the largest collegiate bicycle race in the United States.

The Bloomington Police Department has not yet responded to requests for further comment.
