Giants beat Marlins, secure their third consecutive series win

SAN FRANCISCO — Casey Schmidt Shines Again

Just a day after giving the Giants a crucial lead with a timely single, Schmidt pulled off another impressive feat against the Marlins, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure.

In the seventh inning, he stepped up and broke the tie with a three-run homer over left field, leading the Giants to a 6-3 victory and securing a series win.

This stellar outing from Schmidt made sure that Landen Loop’s longest start of his career would not go to waste.

Loop took the mound to start the eighth and left the field with two outs to a round of applause from the crowd.

However, the walk that ended his appearance was noteworthy, marking him as only the fourth Marlins batter to reach base, thus ending his streak at 18.

His only mishap in the lineup occurred in the second inning, where he allowed the first two batters to get on base after pithing 29 pitches. It seemed the Marlins could escape unharmed, but after getting Graham Polley to a 0-2 count with two outs, the No. 8 batter connected with a curveball that flew over the right field wall, creating the only scoring threat until that eighth inning.

Throughout the first five innings, the Giants halted runners in scoring position twice, appearing to maintain their early 3-0 lead. Yet, Rafael Devers came alive with an RBI double in the sixth, and Schmidt took a breather the following inning.

What It Means

The Giants celebrated their second come-from-behind win of the game and finished their homestand with a 4-2 record, marking a continuation of their success with three straight series wins. Interestingly, prior to this streak, they had struggled at 2-13 when the opponent scored first.

Who’s Hot

Jung Hoo Lee, batting in the leadoff position for the first time since the season’s opening series, maintained his momentum, achieving multiple hits for the fourth time in just six games at home. While the Giants couldn’t capitalize on an early triple, Lee recorded his 100th career RBI with a single and later scored following Schmidt’s home run.

Interestingly, the Giants’ outfielders combined for a .367 batting average through the homestand, including seven extra-base hits; Lee, Herriot Ramos, and Drew Gilbert all contributed with home runs. Remarkably, before this stretch, San Francisco’s outfield had been among the weakest in baseball.

Who’s Not?

Willie Adams took his first day off of the season. With this break, alongside a previous day off, manager Tony Vitello is hopeful that Adams can shake off a dismal 0-for-21 slump.

The fact remains, San Francisco managed to win four out of six games; however, the top batters in their lineup struggled significantly. Devers’ double in the sixth marked the first RBI from him, Adams, or Matt Chapman throughout the homestand, with a combined batting average of 8-for-61.

Looking Ahead

The Giants will enjoy a day off on Monday before embarking on a six-game road trip against the Phillies and Rays. Earlier this month, they faced the Phillies and taken two out of three games, stirring what would become a ten-game losing streak for Philadelphia.
