Patricia Heaton Urges Political Civility After Shooting Incident

Patricia Heaton has reached out to her “friends on the left,” asking them to dial down the intense political language after a shooting occurred during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

On Saturday night, gunfire erupted near the ballroom at the Washington Hilton, prompting the evacuation of prominent figures, including President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and first lady Melania Trump. The shooter was apprehended after firing at Secret Service agents in the lobby.

As the shots rang out, hundreds of attendees sought refuge under tables or inside the ballroom, resulting in the postponement of the event.

The following day, Heaton, 68, expressed her thoughts on X, stating that even though she disagrees with past Democratic presidents like Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Joe Biden, she believes it’s crucial for those who speak out against political figures to abandon extremist language and violent imagery.

“I wasn’t thrilled when Clinton, Obama, and Biden won,” she noted, “but I never referred to them as fascists or threats to democracy. I certainly didn’t wish harm upon them. I just moved on with a sense of gratitude. Friends on the left, try this approach. It could improve your life and our country,” the star of “Everybody Loves Raymond” remarked.

On Sunday, a senior federal law enforcement official revealed to Fox News that the suspect had indicated he aimed to target members of the Trump administration.

The suspect has been identified as 31-year-old Cole Allen from Torrance, California. Officials reported that he had prepared a manifesto explaining his intentions and had exhibited anti-Trump and anti-Christian sentiments on social media.

During the shooting event, Allen allegedly breached a Secret Service checkpoint armed with multiple firearms, shooting at an agent wearing a bulletproof vest.

The agent returned fire, incapacitating Allen. Both the suspect and the injured officer were transported to the hospital, where the Secret Service officer is expected to make a full recovery and was released on Sunday.

This incident is part of a troubling trend of threats against former President Trump, including two confirmed assassination attempts and a recent armed incident at Mar-a-Lago.

The White House confirmed that prior to the shooting, Allen’s brother had alerted police in New London, Connecticut, about a document that allegedly contained his brother’s manifesto targeting administration officials.

Authorities noted that Allen’s social media presence featured anti-Trump and anti-Christian rhetoric.

Allen’s sister, Abrianna, informed investigators that he had increasingly voiced his frustrations and often mentioned wanting to take action to solve global issues.

Heaton has previously criticized the use of inflammatory political language. After the assassination of Charlie Kirk in September 2025, she condemned the moral inconsistency of individuals celebrating his death online.

In a tweet at that time, she remarked, “The most violent rhetoric tends to emerge from those who include phrases like ‘choose kindness’ in their social media bios.”

After the 2024 presidential election, Heaton accused commentators of spreading fear and disparaging voters in their discourse surrounding Trump, asserting that he threatened voters’ ways of life.

“To all the extremists allowed on TV who told women what would happen to them, shame on you! You targeted and incited fear into vulnerable individuals. Get back on air and reassure them that things will be okay,” she said in a video posted to X in November 2024.

“And could you please stop labeling people as ‘uneducated’ simply because they vote differently? Let’s learn to understand those with diverse needs and valid grievances instead of dismissing them,” she added. “When will you learn?”
