Victor Wembanyama Returns for Game 4 Against Trail Blazers
San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama made his comeback during Game 4 against the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday after having entered concussion protocol following Game 2.
Wembanyama expressed disappointment regarding how the concussion protocols were managed, though he didn’t go into more specifics. “The way the situation was handled was very disappointing,” he told reporters. “I’m not here to judge if it was the right call to keep me off the court or not. It is what it is, but the handling was disappointing.”
He suffered an injury in the first half of the Spurs’ narrow 106-103 loss to the Trail Blazers on Tuesday and didn’t return for that game, instead opting to travel to Portland while he continued to work towards playing in Game 4.
When asked for details, he said, “I won’t get into specifics. I prefer to stay focused. Maybe ask me again after the season wraps up.”
In his return, Wembanyama delivered an impressive performance with 27 points, 11 rebounds, and seven blocks, contributing significantly to the Spurs’ 114-93 victory. Remarkably, his availability was confirmed just an hour before the game started.
The 7-foot-4 player, who was unanimously recognized as the NBA Defensive Player of the Year, had averaged 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 3.1 blocks during the regular season.
Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson mentioned that the team was ready to adapt if Wembanyama was not cleared to play. “We have experience with different lineups and rotations,” he noted before the match. “This season has pushed us to foster a strong identity regardless of our roster status.”
Players diagnosed with a concussion must meet a series of benchmarks before being allowed to play again. These results are compared to their baseline neurological evaluations taken at the start of the season.
Game 5 is set for Tuesday night in San Antonio.
