Crew Member Falls Overboard from Cruise Ship off Massachusetts
On Sunday, a crew member fell overboard from the Norwegian Breakaway, which was approximately 19 miles off the coast of Massachusetts. This incident triggered a large-scale search and rescue operation.
Surveillance footage captured an unidentified individual jumping from the ship into the frigid waters. The event occurred while the ship was en route back to Boston after a week-long cruise to Bermuda, just after 1:15 a.m.
Passengers were understandably shaken by the incident. “It’s very heartbreaking,” shared Rebecca Durandis from Needham, Massachusetts. She recounted hearing a loud bang from her room, realizing something was amiss. She saw the crew trying to respond to the emergency.
Despite the announcement for a shipwide evacuation, the search efforts, which included a lifeboat and a helicopter from the U.S. Coast Guard, did not yield any results. The Coast Guard launched multiple aircraft, with one helicopter departing in the early afternoon, but the search was ultimately suspended, pending further information.
The Norwegian Breakaway arrived at Boston’s Black Falcon Terminal just before noon, significantly later than scheduled. All passengers received notifications explaining the delay due to the ongoing search and rescue efforts, which continued throughout the night.
A message from the cruise line expressed their commitment to safety, acknowledging that such situations are never easy. They emphasized that the well-being of everyone at sea remains paramount in their decision-making processes.
