An iconic New York architect has made his condo available for new owners. The Upper East Side residence of Robert A. M. Stern, famed for his work on luxury condominiums like 15 Central Park West and 220 Central Park South, is now priced at $4.5 million.
Mr. Stern, the former dean of Yale’s School of Architecture, was recognized as an architect for the city’s elite. Sadly, he passed away on Thanksgiving morning at 86 due to lung disease.
This roughly 1,700-square-foot, two-bedroom unit is part of the Stern-designed Chatham at 181 East 65th Street and was his first condo ownership. His son, Nicholas, recounted that Mr. Stern felt it was time to secure a home in the very building he worked on.
He had the advantage of insider knowledge when choosing his residence. Specifics about the purchase price remain unclear. This sixth-floor apartment comes with 11-foot ceilings and a terrace of about 88 square feet. One marketing photo playfully nods to him with a martini—a drink he loved—set on the outdoor table.
Assisted by his firm, Robert AM Stern Architects, Mr. Stern refurbished the condo. Notable features include a spacious entry gallery, a great room that replaced the original third bedroom, and a study, converted from another bedroom, lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.
Selling images highlight the views from the apartment: a beautifully landscaped garden with rose windows looking onto a nearby church. The interior is bright, benefiting from three exposures, and the dual-entry kitchen is outfitted with high-end appliances, as noted on StreetEasy.
The estate has arranged for the condo’s sale.
