Tragic Plane Crash Claims Lives of North Dakota Lawmaker and Pilot

A state lawmaker from North Dakota and a pilot were sadly killed in a small plane crash that occurred in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota on Saturday.

The lawmaker was identified as Rep. Liz Conmey (D-Fargo), though the pilot’s identity hasn’t been disclosed.

The plane, a Beech F33A, went down shortly after taking off from Crystal Airport, igniting upon impact. Emergency crews responded quickly, finding the aircraft fully engulfed in flames, which firefighters managed to extinguish promptly.

Footage captured by onlookers showed the moment of the crash and the subsequent fire.

The National Transportation Safety Board has stated they will investigate the incident.

“We are heartbroken and devastated by the passing of Congresswoman Liz Conmey. Her loss is a tremendous blow to our state. She was a strong advocate for public education, environmental causes, and government transparency,” expressed the North Dakota Democratic Party in a statement.

Reports indicate that the pilot was a friend of Conmey’s. Notably, she was running for re-election and is survived by four children.

State Sen. Tim Mathern characterized Conmey as a friend and a former vice presidential candidate, highlighting her enthusiasm for life and strong dedication to her work, stating she would be missed by both parties.

A neighbor living near the crash site reported feeling their house shake upon the impact of the plane and said they rushed to the scene while calling for help.

In the wake of this tragedy, North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong noted, “Liz served our state with incredible care and compassion through her work in the Legislature and various commissions. Gersti and I are deeply saddened by her passing, and we extend our sincere condolences to her family and friends. We ask all North Dakotans to keep Liz in their thoughts and prayers.” He ordered flags to be flown at half-staff on the day of her funeral, encouraging residents to honor her memory.
