Confrontation Over Climate Change in Congressional Hearing

On Monday, Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) expressed strong criticism toward EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin during a hearing. Zeldin was there to discuss President Donald Trump’s proposal to significantly reduce the budget of the Interior Department. The discussion turned tense as DeLauro raised issues surrounding climate change, at which point Zeldin referenced the Clean Air Act and a relevant Supreme Court case, Roper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo.

“How can the EPA justify neglecting its responsibility to protect Americans while favoring polluters, especially at a time when climate change is causing floods and increasing health care expenses?” DeLauro questioned. Zeldin responded by querying the specifics of Section 202 of the Clean Air Act regarding international climate change initiatives.

“Others may think they know, but I can assure you, I do not agree,” DeLauro replied. Zeldin emphasized the importance of adhering to the Clean Air Act’s guidelines.

DeLauro has become noticeably more adversarial in her stance, accusing Zeldin of denying climate change and undermining scientific research. “You cannot dismiss the existence of climate change. That belief is a hoax and reflects the stance of this administration,” she argued.

“You seem upset and perhaps a bit lost. As a member of Congress, you really should be informed,” Zeldin shot back.

Later, Zeldin shared their contentious interaction on social media, expressing frustration that DeLauro had instigated a debate with someone knowledgeable about federal law and the Supreme Court’s decisions.

He added, “Today’s self-destruction is by DeLauro. I will adhere to the interpretations of federal law according to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Roper-Bright, without regrets.”
