Jimmy Kimmel Faces Backlash for Controversial Joke
A recent incident involving comedian Jimmy Kimmel has stirred controversy, leaving many at ABC feeling uneasy.
Kimmel found himself in hot water just days before an assassination attempt on Trump. At a White House Correspondents Association dinner—a gathering attended by the President, First Lady Melania Trump, and most of the Cabinet—he made a poor-timed joke aimed at the couple.
On his late-night show, he reenacted the dinner, where he took jabs at both Melania and Donald Trump. “Our First Lady, Melania, is here. Look, Melania, you’re so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have the glow of a pregnant widow,” he quipped, eliciting laughter from the liberal audience.
The First Couple responded with a statement calling for Kimmel’s dismissal from the Disney-owned network.
Some ABC staff members expressed frustration, feeling the network often finds itself caught in Kimmel’s escalating drama. “The government shouldn’t dictate who gets airtime,” one staffer remarked, “But if I were leading a media outlet, I’d think seriously about the values I’d want to communicate to my audience.”
They suggested two contrasting models: “A ‘Ted Lasso’ approach, showcasing goodness and community-building, versus a ‘House of Cards’ mentality, where people are ruthlessly self-serving.” The staffer insisted such standards should be applied to everyone in office.
Melania Trump also urged ABC to let Kimmel go, labeling his comments as “hateful and violent.”
An entertainment lawyer representing ABC Talent criticized Disney, voicing concern that the network has strayed from wholesome American values. The lawyer questioned what Kimmel would need to do to damage ABC’s image further and described the uproar as “embarrassing for Disney.”
Amid this backlash, former Obama adviser David Axelrod deemed Kimmel’s joke “in bad taste” and called for an apology.
Disney had not provided a comment regarding the unfolding situation as of the latest updates.
Kimmel’s past remarks about conservative figures have led to threats against Kimmel’s show, resulting in significant backlash from both sides of the political spectrum. Last fall, he suggested that a figure was part of a “MAGA gang” following an assassination attempt related to a conservative icon, which generated outrage and led to serious consequences for the show’s airing.
This time, it remains uncertain whether Disney will uphold its support for Kimmel. The previous controversy was dealt with under CEO Bob Iger, who recommended suspending Kimmel temporarily. Since Iger’s resignation and the succession of Josh D’Amaro, this is D’Amaro’s first significant challenge as CEO. Despite this, Kimmel’s contract was extended through May 2027.
In a related note, Cole Thomas Allen, 31, from Torrance, California, was indicted recently for attempting to target Trump and other Cabinent members. He faces several charges, including attempted assassination and could potentially face life in prison.
