Germany's Chancellor Merz Says Iran's Leaders Are 'Humiliating' the U.S.

German Chancellor Challenges U.S. Approach to Iran

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed on Monday that he believes the United States feels “humiliated” by Iran’s leadership during a European Union event at the Carolus Magnus Gymnasium in Marsberg, North Rhine-Westphalia. He accused Tehran of outsmarting the Trump administration in ongoing negotiations.

As reported by Deutsche Welle, Merz drew parallels between the current situation in the Middle East and past conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, indicating that Washington seems to lack a “clear strategy” for resolution.

In a recently surfaced clip, he remarked, “At this point, we don’t know what kind of strategic disengagement the Americans are pursuing.” He pointed out that Iran is either negotiating skillfully or dodging negotiations altogether, allowing American officials to visit Islamabad only to send them back empty-handed. He stated, “The entire country is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership, especially the so-called Revolutionary Guards.”

Additionally, Merz highlighted that European leaders were not consulted before the onset of the Iran conflict. He noted that he had shared his doubts with President Trump during two conversations, adding, “If I had known this situation would extend for weeks and worsen, I would have voiced my concerns more forcefully.”

These comments came shortly after President Trump announced the cancellation of a U.S. delegation’s visit to meet with Iranian representatives in Pakistan, citing “infighting” and “chaos” within Iran’s leadership as reasons for the change in plans.

During the event in Marsberg, Merz also pointed out that the conflict is adversely affecting the German economy, stating it is “costing a lot of money.” He reiterated Germany’s plan to send minesweepers to the Strait of Hormuz to help secure trade routes but emphasized that any deployment would depend on the cessation of hostilities in the area.

Later the same day, Merz reportedly conveyed his disillusionment with U.S. and Israeli actions against Iran in a private meeting with members of the Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union of Bavaria (CDU/CSU). He insisted that the swift solutions initially sought by the U.S. and Israel had not materialized.

“Thus, from the European perspective, we also wish to engage in diplomatic efforts for a resolution,” Merz concluded, underscoring that Europe has its own ideas for addressing the conflict while working alongside the U.S.
