Karex alerts that condom prices may increase by as much as 30% due to concerns over the Iran conflict

The ongoing conflict in Iran is expected to have an unexpected consequence for consumers: a significant rise in condom prices.

Karex, the largest condom manufacturer globally, has indicated through Reuters that it might raise prices by as much as 30% due to pressures on global energy and supply chains resulting from the Middle East tensions.

This warning illustrates how war can lead to increased costs and shipping delays, affecting even niche consumer products. It’s a stark reminder that our daily lives and items we take for granted can be caught in larger global issues.

Central to this situation is the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial point for global energy supply where shipping has dramatically slowed. This strategic waterway, flanked by Iran, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates, is facing significant disruptions due to the conflict, with oil and essential goods unable to pass through.

As a result, the costs of oil-based products—like plastics and rubber—are on the rise. These materials play a vital role in everything from medical supplies to everyday household goods.

Karex’s CEO, Goh Mia Kiat, expressed that rising energy costs could force the company to increase prices. The conflict has caused a notable spike in the cost of materials like aluminum and silicone oil, both important for condom production, and there’s also a shortage of synthetic rubber used in some non-latex options.

Situated in Malaysia, Karex produces over 5 billion condoms annually and exports to more than 130 nations. However, it is currently struggling to meet the demand as supply issues worsen, impacting major condom brands such as Trojan and Durex.

Delivery delays are compounding problems, leaving more products at sea than on store shelves. By the time these products arrive in markets across the U.S. and Europe, it may take an additional two months, with developing countries facing even longer wait times.

Karex is also involved in supplying aid for United Nations programs, which raises concerns that these disruptions could impact the most vulnerable populations worldwide.

Moreover, the company produces personal lubricants, medical catheters, and gloves, showing that supply chain issues could have wider-reaching consequences beyond just condom prices. Consumers might need to brace for price increases on essential health products at the checkout.
