Mangione's attorneys call for an end to violence and reject connections to copycat crimes.

Luigi Mangione’s legal team is urging an end to political violence in the U.S. and is trying to separate him from unrelated criminal cases. Attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo emphasized that Mangione opposes violence of any kind and criticized attempts to link him to other acts as reckless and prejudicial.

Her remarks were made during the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington, D.C. recently, following heightened concerns about related incidents.

Cole Allen, a California teacher, was recently arrested for allegedly shooting a U.S. Secret Service agent in an unsuccessful attempt to get into an event that included President Donald Trump and other high-profile figures.

Federal prosecutors have accused Allen of preparing to assassinate the president and have charged him for carrying weapons while expressing violent intentions in a manifesto. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro stated that his actions could have resulted in a significant tragedy, noting that political violence is unacceptable in the city.

In another disturbing incident, Daniel Moreno-Gama from Texas was accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail at OpenAI founder Sam Altman’s residence. Reports indicated the young suspect had mentioned targeting tech CEOs with violence.

To add to the concerns, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins suggested that inflammatory rhetoric could have motivated some recent violent acts.

One of Mangione’s alleged affiliations involved Chamel Abdulkarim, who reportedly called for Mangione in a video, in connection with an arson incident in Ontario, California.

Prosecutors claim that Mangione’s murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was politically motivated and aimed to provoke broader societal reactions. They argue that the case reflects an intent to normalize violence for ideological ends.

Mangione is accused of stalking Thompson prior to the shooting and allegedly inscribed a message on the bullet casing as a way to attract media attention. He is also said to have documented his motivations in a diary.

In September 2025, Charlie Kirk was assassinated during an event, with details emerging about messages carved into shell casings associated with the murder.

Other violent incidents include a shooting targeting ICE agents in Dallas and a shooting at a Catholic church by a suspect who shared violent ideologies online. In response to these events, Mangione’s lawyers argued that Thompson’s death should not be classified as a political act, given that Mangione was not involved in politics himself.

The defense contends that the government has unfairly associated Mangione with various unrelated acts of violence and extremist groups. They assert that this prejudicial approach is part of a broader political narrative that seeks to frame Mangione inaccurately as part of a violent leftist agenda.

Despite the intensity of the case, Mangione’s lawyers succeeded in having the death penalty removed as a potential outcome.
