LA Sparks Appoint New President
The LA Sparks are entering a new chapter with the appointment of Stacey Johns as their president, a move that was announced on Tuesday.
Previously, Johns served as the CEO of Bay FC, a role she just took on in the National Women’s Soccer League three months ago. Leaving that position, she is now set to lead the Sparks.
“This opportunity brings two things that are very important to me: leading an iconic franchise at a pivotal time in women’s basketball, and returning to Los Angeles with my family full-time,” Johns remarked.
Before joining Bay FC, Johns held significant roles as chief business officer at LAFC and BMO Stadium. It’s interesting, really; she spent nearly two decades working with the Indianapolis Colts, which is quite a shift from soccer to basketball, isn’t it?
Johns expressed enthusiasm about her new role: “I’ve been part of building something special at LAFC. I’ve seen what’s possible in this market, and I’m incredibly energized by the opportunity to help build something meaningful here while shaping what comes next.” She clearly sees a lot of potential ahead for the Sparks.
This move aligns with a broader strategy involving other teams in Los Angeles owned by billionaire Mark Walter, specifically the Dodgers and Lakers. According to insiders, this is part of a vision to create synergy among the three teams.
Ron Rosen, a longtime Dodgers executive, commented on Johns’ appointment, saying, “Stacey, she’s a visionary. It was Mark Walter’s vision to make this happen and orchestrate it.” With a strong focus on leveraging the strengths of these franchises, there’s a palpable sense of excitement about what the future holds.
