Public Figures and Officials Have Slandered Trump and the GOP for Years

Incident at White House Correspondents’ Dinner

During Saturday night’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, President Donald Trump was once again targeted, marking the third such incident in two years. This follows a history of harsh and negative remarks directed at him by celebrities, commentators, and Democratic officials alike.

At a press briefing earlier this week, Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt stated that the years of vilifying Trump by various left-wing voices and some media outlets have contributed to a culture that now breeds political violence.

A report from Rutgers and the Network Infection Research Institute released in April 2025 backs Leavitt’s assertions, suggesting that political violence appears to have been normalized among certain groups on the left. In fact, 56% of individuals identifying as center-left deemed the idea of killing Trump at least somewhat justifiable.

Numerous celebrities and media figures have repeatedly demonized Trump. Recently, three prominent late-night hosts have made provocative comments about him. Jimmy Kimmel’s latest remarks were particularly noteworthy considering the incident that occurred at the Washington Hilton Hotel. Just a week before, Kimmel made a comment regarding First Lady Melania Trump that drew criticism from the couple themselves. It occurred just days after an individual named Cole Thomas Allen allegedly targeted Trump and high-ranking administration members.

In November 2023, Seth Meyers described Trump’s rhetoric at a rally as “openly fascist” and suggested he aimed for an authoritarian regime if elected. Similarly, Stephen Colbert labeled Trump a “fascist” on his CBS show. Such descriptors have become common among left-wing commentators discussing Trump.

In another instance, Rachel Maddow remarked during a May 2025 interview that the country was undergoing an attempted authoritarian overthrow, emphasizing that it was driven by the current political party rather than a rebel movement. She highlighted the importance of learning from history in times like these.

Looking back, James Carville compared Trump’s 2024 Madison Square Garden rally to a Nazi rally from 1939, predicting that Trump and his supporters were openly discussing their intentions to implement a fascist regime.

Just days before the recent assassination attempt, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries referred to the current political atmosphere as a “war.” His statements, along with others made by various Democratic officials and commentators, have shown a trend of extreme language towards Trump and his supporters.

For example, Governor Josh Shapiro asserted that key figures in government must play significant roles. Meanwhile, California Governor Gavin Newsom used strong language regarding political conflicts, insisting on a fierce approach in their battle against rivals. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez previously labeled the Trump administration as “fascist.”

Leavitt, during her press conference, pointed out many instances of this harsh anti-Trump sentiment that have contributed to the current state of political violence.
