ICE detains undocumented immigrant charged with the murder of newlyweds in Oregon

Person charged in Oregon double-fatal crash held a California license, DHS reports

Immigrant Arrested After Fatal Oregon Crash

A man from India, who is in the U.S. illegally, has been arrested by federal immigration officials following a horrific crash in Oregon that killed a newlywed couple. The authorities say this arrest comes after he was released by local officials.

Rajinder Kumar, 32, was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) expressed concerns about his release due to what they term “Oregon sanctuary politicians.”

Reports indicate that Kumar allegedly caused a serious accident on Highway 20 in Deschutes County by jackknifing a semi-truck on November 24. This incident resulted in a collision with a Subaru Outback, claiming the lives of the driver, William Micah Carter, and his passenger, Jennifer Lynn Lower. Tragically, the couple had only been married for 16 days.

Kumar was released from custody on April 2 after local authorities declined to cooperate with ICE, as noted by DHS. He was arrested by ICE on April 22 and is now being held at the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma while awaiting deportation proceedings.

He faces charges of manslaughter and reckless endangerment. Further details reveal that Kumar entered the U.S. illegally in November 2022 near Lukeville, Arizona. After being released by the Biden administration, he obtained a work permit in 2023, along with a commercial driver’s license in California.

Acting Assistant Secretary of State Lauren Biss criticized California’s Governor Gavin Newsom’s office for issuing Kumar’s license. She stated that this illegal immigrant had a commercial driver’s license from California and drove recklessly, resulting in the death of two honeymooners. Rather than cooperating with ICE, she argued, Oregon authorities opted to release him back into the community.

Biss also remarked that sanctuary policies jeopardize public safety, asserting that every time dangerous criminals are released, American lives are put at risk. She emphasized appreciation for ICE law enforcement for their efforts to ensure Kumar would not harm anyone else.

Fox News Digital reached out for comments from both Newsom’s office and DHS to clarify the situation with Oregon’s cooperation.
