Street signs named 'Charlie Kirk Way' in Westminster pay tribute to killed activist

In a context of rising tensions related to political violence and free speech, a city in Southern California has ignited controversy by installing a street sign dedicated to the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

During an event on Tuesday, Mayor Chi Charlie Nguyen unveiled the “Charlie Kirk Way” sign, marking a redesignation of All American Way near the Civic Center in Westminster.

“By doing this, we promote freedom, freedom of speech, here in the City of Westminster,” Nguyen stated.

The City Council had given the green light to the initiative last fall with a 4-1 vote, following Nguyen’s proposal a few months earlier.

Importantly, this action does not alter street names or addresses formally. Instead, the new sign indicating “Charlie Kirk Way” sits alongside the original All American Way designation, positioned between Westminster Boulevard and 13th Street.

“I’m personally very inspired by what Charlie Kirk has done for our country, for young people, for the next generation,” Nguyen shared.

Additionally, the city council declared October 14, which is Kirk’s birthday, as “Charlie Kirk Day.”

As a notable conservative activist closely associated with former President Donald Trump, Kirk founded Turning Point USA and aimed to engage young voters.

His passing resulted from an incident on September 10, 2025, at Utah Valley University in Orem, where a 22-year-old named Tyler Robinson allegedly executed the shooting from a rooftop above a crowded area.

Robinson later turned himself in to a sheriff’s office in southwestern Utah the following night and was taken into custody.

As emotions run high nationally due to various assassination attempts against Trump in states like Pennsylvania, Florida, and Washington, D.C., the decision in Westminster has sparked intense debate. Supporters argue that it’s a stand for free speech, while critics dismiss it as a partisan move under the guise of community approval.
