Steve Kerr's prospects with the Golden State Warriors remain unclear

Steve Kerr’s future with the Warriors remains uncertain after recent meetings with key figures in the organization.

Reports indicate that Kerr met with team owner Joe Lacob on Wednesday and general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. earlier in the week on Monday. The discussions lasted around two hours, and while both parties described them as “productive,” they did not come to a conclusion.

With Kerr’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, further negotiations with Golden State’s management are expected to continue next week.

Over his 12-year coaching career, Kerr, now 60, has led the team to four NBA championships and recently achieved the distinction of being the fourth-fastest coach to reach 600 regular-season wins.

However, sources say that within the Warriors’ leadership team, there’s a growing belief that a shift in strategy might be necessary, especially considering Stephen Curry’s age and the team’s second sub-.500 finish under Kerr.

Following the Warriors’ defeat to the Suns in the play-in tournament, Kerr expressed that he would understand if the team opted to move in a different direction.

A couple of weeks ago, he mentioned he needed time to reflect before proceeding with discussions with Lacob and Dunleavy. Sources close to Kerr shared that he’s still figuring out his preferences, yet officials have indicated that any final decision will be focused on what’s best for basketball.

Ultimately, both sides seem to be taking their time, with no urgency apparent. The Warriors will find out their position in the draft lottery next Sunday, which could have an impact on Kerr’s decisions. They hold the 11th-best odds, with a 9.4% chance of landing a top-four pick; a favorable outcome could help bolster Curry’s lineup as he continues his career.
