Orioles Lose Key Pitcher for At Least Two Weeks
The Baltimore Orioles are facing a setback as starting pitcher Trevor Rogers is out for a minimum of two weeks due to an undisclosed illness. The team made the decision to place him on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Sunday.
To fill the gap in the rotation, the Orioles have summoned Cameron Foster from Triple-A.
This past Saturday, Rogers had a rough outing against the Red Sox, lasting just 1 2/3 innings before being pulled. He allowed three runs on four hits and issued two walks, contributing to a hefty 17-1 defeat.
Following the game, the 28-year-old expressed a sense of optimism, saying, “I came into today feeling really good. I feel good physically. I think I’m in a very good place.” He remains hopeful for improvement, stating, “If I keep doing what I’m supposed to do and keep pitching in good spots, eventually it’s going to go my way.” He emphasized his commitment to making contact and having batters swing at his pitches, acknowledging his current struggles but maintaining that he’s just down from one poor inning.
Despite starting the season late, Rogers shone last year, making 18 starts with impressive stats—posting a 1.81 ERA and a 0.903 WHIP. This performance earned him some recognition in the Cy Young Award voting, finishing ninth in the American League.
Rogers was drafted in the first round by the Marlins in 2017 and participated in the All-Star game in 2021. However, he faced challenges in the following seasons, and his trade to Baltimore midway through the 2024 season was seen as a potential turning point.
This season, however, he hasn’t quite found his rhythm yet, struggling with a 4.75 ERA over 30 1/3 innings pitched. With his injury, he now becomes the 11th player on the Orioles’ injured list.
As for the team, they had their game on Wednesday canceled due to rain and currently sit in third place in the American League East with a record of 14 wins and 15 losses. Notably, no pitcher in the current rotation has exceeded 20 innings with an ERA under 4.00, which has complicated their ability to perform like a solid starting unit.
