Florida Democrat in a pink jumpsuit grabs a bullhorn during the vote: 'It's not allowed!'

Florida Democratic Representative Angie Nixon generated attention after a dramatic interruption in the House chamber. She stormed the aisle during the final vote of a redistricting bill endorsed by Governor Ron DeSantis, using a bullhorn to voice her discontent.

Dressed in a pink jumpsuit and wielding a pink megaphone, Nixon approached the Speaker’s podium as the final tally was being announced. She exclaimed, “This is unconstitutional! This is unconstitutional!” Throughout the vote, her protests continued, asserting, “What you guys are doing is illegal!” and “We will not allow you to destroy our democracy!” Numerous colleagues recorded her actions on their phones.

Despite her efforts, the vote proceeded. Nixon repeatedly declared, “I’m not feeling well!” before the Florida House confirmed the bill’s approval with an 83-28 vote. The Florida Senate had also passed the legislation earlier that week, sending it to DeSantis for his signature.

The newly drawn district is anticipated to benefit Republicans, potentially allowing them to gain four additional seats. At a national level, both parties are engaged in a redistricting struggle as they brace for the upcoming midterm elections. States like Texas, California, and Virginia have already enacted redistricting plans.

In defense of Florida’s approach, DeSantis explained to Fox News Digital earlier this week that the state had not gained enough representation from the 2020 Census, saying they’ve fought for fairer representation since then. He remarked on the demographic shift, noting an increase in population that shifted the balance from a Democratic majority to a Republican majority by 1.5 million.

The redistricting plan, which reflects demographic changes, seeks to consolidate Republican-leaning areas and is expected to create four additional seats favorable to the party. DeSantis argued that the existing maps were “racially based” and should be deemed unconstitutional.

“The new 2026 map delivers on my promise to implement redistricting mid-decade, creating a representation that aligns with today’s Florida demographics,” he asserted.

Currently, Florida’s congressional scene consists of 20 Republicans and seven Democrats, with eight Democratic seats unfilled following the resignation of former Congresswoman Sheila Cherfils McCormick.

This redistricting plan comes after Virginia’s recent approval of a constitutional amendment allowing changes to its congressional districts, which could flip four Republican seats to Democratic control. The proposal received support from several Democratic figures, including Governor Abigail Spanberger and former President Barack Obama.

Fox News Digital attempted to reach Nixon for her input on the situation.
