Emily Blunt found herself under fire on social media after suggesting fans should leave their jobs and accept being “broke.”
During a recent TV appearance, the actress from “The Devil Wears Prada 2” was asked about her advice for “women who are hating their jobs right now.” She initially hesitated and whispered, “Don’t…no.”
After a lighthearted moment, she added, “Find what you really want to do.”
“Even if you don’t have an income, if you love what you do, you can be happy,” the 43-year-old actress stated.
Many fans criticized her comments as “terrible career advice,” noting the disconnect between her wealth—estimated around $80 million—and the realities faced by everyday workers. One comment on YouTube remarked that such suggestions are typically made by those in a position of privilege.
Another fan expressed frustration on X, arguing that celebrities like Blunt should stop downplaying the importance of financial stability, as it’s insulting to those struggling. Yet another user described her advice as “delusional,” pointing out that the current job market doesn’t allow everyone the luxury of pursuing their passion without financial consequences.
Blunt’s statements sparked a range of reactions, with one individual admitting her comments had made them think less of her. Others reiterated that not everyone can afford to take on lower-paying jobs just because they might enjoy them.
Page Six has reached out for a comment from Blunt’s team.
As she joins fellow stars Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, and Stanley Tucci on the press tour for “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” Blunt portrays Emily Charlton, who transitions from being an assistant to a senior executive at Dior.
In a recent interview with “Today,” she expressed her love for portraying “free” characters.
When reflecting on her role, Blunt remarked, “I don’t know if she’s gotten softer over time,” emphasizing the complexity and fun of her character.
“The Devil Wears Prada 2” is set to open this Friday.
