Kirby Smart from Georgia claims the Big Ten is a 'more competitive conference' than the SEC following the CFP title streak.

Big Ten Dominates College Football Landscape

The Big Ten has firmly established itself at the pinnacle of college football, claiming three consecutive College Football Playoffs and, well, a trophy to showcase its dominance over the SEC.

Recently, there’s been a lot of chatter about the Big Ten’s somewhat isolated position in the postseason. There are theories floating around—some say it’s due to increased NIL spending, while others believe SEC teams aren’t hoarding talent as they used to.

In the last three championship games, the Big Ten emerged victorious with teams like Indiana, Ohio State, and Michigan leading the charge. This puts pressure on Southern teams to either adapt to changing dynamics or risk falling further behind in the standings.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart has voiced concerns about the new competitiveness among teams that previously struggled, like Indiana. “There’s a more competitive conference now,” Smart mentioned. “In the past, it was just Ohio State or a strong Michigan team. Now, teams like Indiana and Oregon are stepping up and can attract quality players.”

Smart also pointed to the role of NIL deals, noting that other schools like Miami are also finding ways to bring in talent. The playing field seems to be leveling out, evident in the results we’ve seen: three championships in a row for the Big Ten.

Is the Conference Tougher Top to Bottom?

There’s certainly a discussion to be had around the strength of schedules in the Big Ten compared to the SEC. While Vanderbilt has enjoyed some recent success, it appears that competition is tightening at the bottom of the SEC, too.

That said, the success of teams can be pretty uneven these days. We’ve seen some teams in the Big Ten, like Northwestern and Purdue, struggle, while SEC teams like South Carolina faced challenges last season.

Does this mean the SEC teams are just beating up on each other for nothing? Smart doesn’t think that’s his main concern, but it’s clear some coaches might feel differently.

“I often hear from SEC coaches that teams lack grit, but that’s not entirely fair,” Smart noted. “Their tougher games don’t always compare to our schedules. When we play teams like Starkville and Vanderbilt, those can be serious challenges, too. There’s this perception that we’re all just wearing each other down, but it’s just a different kind of intensity.”

This debate isn’t likely to quiet down anytime soon—especially if the SEC falls short in the upcoming championship season.

With NIL changing the landscape, it’s allowed programs that once hoarded talent to recalibrate. As things stand, the Big Ten holds the upper hand right now, which may persist until an SEC school grabs the CFP championship trophy again.

It’s tough to say if that will happen next year in Las Vegas—only time will tell. But for now, the Big Ten is riding a well-deserved wave of success, and that’s certainly something to consider.
