Calais Campbell Signs One-Year Deal with Ravens
Calais Campbell proves that age can be just a number. Recently, he agreed to a one-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens, gearing up for what will be his 19th NFL season in 2026.
But here’s the kicker: he plays as a defensive lineman. That’s a tough position, often requiring strength against double-teams from hefty offensive linemen. I mean, you can imagine those 300-pounders pushing against you. It’s not exactly a walk in the park.
Campbell has a versatile playing style, capable of lining up on the edge during passing situations and, when needed, stepping inside. The Ravens might even utilize him alongside an edge rusher, forcing opponents to make tough decisions about whom to double-team.
And at 40 years old, he’s still making an impact on the field. Yes, 40!
Some might say that having a 40-year-old in the NFL isn’t that jaw-dropping anymore. After all, Tom Brady played until he was 45. Brett Favre and Drew Brees both played until their 40s, too. There are others, like Adam Vinatieri and Morten Andersen, who extended their careers into their late 40s.
Yet, none of those players were on the defensive line. Campbell is set to become the oldest defensive lineman in the league’s history.
Last season, he held the title of the oldest defensive lineman at 39, and it’s worth noting that this position arguably has the most challenging aging process, given the physical toll it takes. While many younger players might handle 70 snaps each game, Campbell will likely be limited to about 20 snaps.
It’s surprising, even to him. When asked last year if he thought that would be his final season, he candidly responded, “I’d be surprised if it wasn’t.” It turns out, he was wrong.
