Arrest Made in Murder of Former Beauty Queen
Mexican authorities announced on Thursday that they have apprehended the mother-in-law wanted for the murder of Carolina Flores Gomez, a former beauty queen. This follows a two-week investigation into her death.
Carolina Flores Gomez, who was crowned Miss Teen Universe Baja California in 2017, was tragically shot on April 15 inside her apartment in a wealthy area of Mexico City, according to reports.
Her mother-in-law, identified as Erika María, was arrested in Venezuela. Mexican authorities had secured an arrest warrant and collaborated with Interpol to issue a Red Notice, which allowed local law enforcement in Venezuela to find and detain her after the alleged crime.
“The detainee is now in the hands of Mexican authorities, and extradition procedures are underway,” stated the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office.
Erika María emerged as the primary suspect after video footage purportedly showing her at the crime scene was circulated on social media.
Flores was found with multiple gunshot wounds—12 in total, including six to her head and the other six to her chest. The incident took place at her home in Polanco where she lived with her husband Alejandro and their eight-month-old child.
Local media reports suggest Alejandro is also under investigation, particularly since there are claims he allowed his mother to leave the scene before reporting the shooting the next day—which raises suspicions about a possible cover-up.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that moments leading up to the murder were captured on a baby monitor, revealing Maria approaching Flores just before the shooting occurred. The footage supposedly includes the sound of gunshots and subsequent chaos as Alejandro confronted his mother.
In an unsettling exchange recorded after the shots were fired, Maria expressed indifference to her son’s distress, indicating a deeper family conflict. Their conversation suggested a tumultuous relationship, where feelings of ownership and betrayal surfaced amid the tragedy.
Reyna Gomez Molina, Flores’ mother, remarked how her son hesitated to call for help, fearing that the baby might be placed in foster care. She had offered to take care of her grandson, but he declined.
