Stephen A. Smith’s Possible Involvement with WWE
What started as a joke among fans about Stephen A. Smith possibly stepping into the wrestling ring has gained traction. Recent talks indicate that he might actually have an on-screen role this summer, according to sources from Fightful Select, known for their reliable wrestling information.
ESPN seems to be quite enthusiastic about this potential collaboration, which comes on the heels of last year’s significant rights deal between WWE and ESPN.
Smith’s representation includes Mark Shapiro, the president of WWE’s parent company TKO. Interestingly, WWE Chairman Nick Khan was also Smith’s former broadcast agent. Their connection could mean interesting developments, especially considering the crossover events that have already occurred, such as Pat McAfee’s involvement in the WrestleMania storyline featuring Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton.
In a twist, McAfee suggested that if Orton were to lose, his WWE contract would be up. If that happens, Smith would make a logical successor to McAfee, as they both shine as ESPN’s top personalities, often embodying that wrestling flair.
Although McAfee found his stride in the WWE — holding his own as a broadcaster and wrestler — it remains uncertain how Smith will adapt to this new environment. At WrestleMania in Las Vegas, he faced loud boos from the crowd, something that, in the wrestling world, counts just as much as cheers. If Smith embraces a villainous persona like McAfee did, it could lead to an entertaining stint.
SummerSlam, which is just around the corner and ranks as WWE’s second-largest event after WrestleMania, could serve as the stage for Smith’s debut. Set for August 1st and 2nd at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the event promises to be a major highlight.
There are hints that Smith’s role could involve crafting storylines or hosting a segment with Danhausen, a comedic wrestler known for his merchandise appeal. Despite some viewers expressing fatigue over Smith’s takes on sports and politics, the prospect of seeing him in WWE adds a layer of excitement. One can only hope he experiences a taste of the action, maybe even a spear from Roman Reigns.
