NBA Playoff Highlights: Pistons vs. Magic
Ah, the perfect end to a weekday. You come home, crack open a drink, and there it is—three NBA games to enjoy on TV, all set to be exciting matchups.
Tonight, two games from the Eastern Conference and one from the West catch the spotlight. The Pistons are aiming to push for a Game 7 in their matchup taking place in Detroit.
It’s worth noting that the Pistons had the most wins in the Eastern Conference this season. While that’s impressive, they didn’t exactly dominate in the first round of the playoffs. I mean, they didn’t play poorly… but some weaknesses that had been covered up before started to show in this seven-game series.
They may be the underdogs, yet they still stand a chance. A victory tonight could flip the series back to Detroit for a decisive Game 7.
Let’s take a moment to recognize how phenomenal Cade Cunningham has been in this series. As the top pick in the 2021 draft, it’s no surprise he performs well, but still, he’s been something special.
His rookie year was decent—fairly expected for a number one pick—and although his second year was hindered by injuries, he really stepped up last season, averaging over 26 points per game. This year, he has helped lead the Pistons to 60 wins, with an impressive playoff average of 32.6 points.
The Magic, on the other hand, have a chance to shake things up. They need to win just one of the next two games to pull off an upset against the top seed, which has happened before.
They’ve now had three opportunities to close this series, but their success hinges on having their full squad. Losing a key player like Franz Wagner clearly affects the team’s dynamic. The team typically thrives on Wagner’s skills, the toughness of Paolo Banchero, Desmond Bane’s shooting, and the defensive strength of Wendell Carter Jr. and Jalen Suggs.
So, if they lose one of those pivotal players, it’s bound to create a struggle. Any team would feel the pinch without their second-best player, but Wagner’s absence is particularly felt here.
I’m optimistic he’ll be back tonight, though I have doubts about whether he’ll play as much or at his usual level. He managed 19 points in the last 24 minutes of Game 4, so there’s hope. The bright side for the Magic is that they’re on home turf this time, which might boost their role players’ performance.
In Game 5, the Pistons capitalized on Wagner’s absence. Banchero had a phenomenal night with 45 points, but Cunningham kept pace with even greater efficiency. Jamal Cain started for the Magic but was limited to just 25 minutes, while Anthony Black logged nearly 40 minutes and held his own.
Despite their efforts, the Pistons only clinched a narrow seven-point win. The Magic outscored them in two quarters and, aside from a rough start, looked solid overall.
I must admit, I’m surprised to see the Pistons favored. The Magic haven’t lost at home yet, and both teams boast a mix of role players and stars. But the challenge is that role players often struggle on the road. If the Magic can maintain their home advantage, they have a genuine shot at winning.
