Trump Celebrates Regulatory Changes for Red Snapper Fishing

On Friday, President Trump took to Truth Social to declare a significant victory for fishermen in states like Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. He indicated that his administration has finished approving state permits for the upcoming 2026 red snapper recreational fishing season.

“Even with record fish populations and proper state permit oversight, our outstanding fishermen have faced years of restricted federal fishing seasons. We aimed to put an end to that for good. We cherish and respect our fishermen, and unlike the Democrats, we consistently support them. To all the red snapper anglers out there—Trump and NOAA have got your backs. Enjoy!!” Trump remarked.

The National Marine Fisheries Service, part of NOAA, previously proposed in February to allow states like Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina to apply for a special fishing license for red snapper.

This initiative aims to lengthen the recreational season, enhance access to local red snapper, and empower states to improve their data collection methods for tracking the red snapper population, according to the American Sportfishing Association (ASA).

Interestingly, the ASA pointed out that despite the red snapper population being the “healthiest” it has been in years, the federal government has traditionally limited recreational fishing to just a handful of weekends each year.

Under this new plan, states will see a much longer recreational season. For instance, Florida’s proposed season is set for 39 days, while South Carolina will have 62 days—Georgia and North Carolina will fall somewhere in between, as noted by the ASA.

On the same Friday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that the expanded fishing season will kick off on May 22.

The feedback to DeSantis’ announcement has been overwhelmingly positive from local fishermen, with many expressing their excitement on social media.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Chairman Rodney Barrett commended both DeSantis and the Trump administration for their roles in this achievement. He stated, “This is a major milestone for Florida’s Atlantic red snapper anglers and the entire fishery. The FWC has worked diligently to make this day a reality, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the support from those invested in the health and accessibility of our vibrant Atlantic red snapper fishery. We appreciate Governor DeSantis for his unwavering leadership and the collaborative effort with the Trump administration to enhance fishing opportunities for Floridians.”
