Yankees Face Decision on Anthony Volpe
The Yankees are nearing a crucial decision regarding Anthony Volpe. This shortstop is set to play in his last minor league rehab game with Double-A Somerset on Sunday, as his rehabilitation from offseason surgery to fix a torn labrum in his left shoulder has reached the 20-day mark.
What initially seemed straightforward—bringing Volpe back to reclaim his role as the Yankees’ shortstop—has become more complex.
They must decide by Tuesday’s game against Texas whether to activate him or send him back to the minors.
Before their game against Baltimore, manager Aaron Boone mentioned that no decision had been made yet. The Yankees, performing notably well, have seen Jose Caballero play a significant role in their success.
“Caballero is making the most of his opportunity and playing outstandingly,” Boone noted. “This complicates things… Jose has been getting plenty of time on the field. I like the idea of him as a super utility player—he excels at that. But, to be fair, he’s also done a fantastic job at shortstop, and that has contributed positively to our offense.”
Boone pointed out the need to understand what role would best suit Volpe, emphasizing that he is “preparing to play shortstop” rather than a utility position.
This situation is, in a way, a fortunate conundrum; the Yankees had won 12 of their last 14 games heading into Sunday.
Just prior to Volpe’s rehab stint on April 10, general manager Brian Cashman indicated that it had always been the intention for Volpe to return to his primary role, although the final call would rest with the manager.
Caballero has stepped up considerably at shortstop, exceeding expectations, which has contributed to the team’s better performance.
He entered Sunday with a .935 OPS and seven steals over his past 19 games, along with a 17-game streak without a fault.
As for Volpe, he managed only one extra-base hit in 45 at-bats during his time in the minors. This lackluster performance adds pressure, especially since last year saw him underperform due to a shoulder injury.
“I think we’re on a solid trajectory,” Boone remarked about the team’s progress. “[Caballero] has played a crucial role defensively and aggressively. He has been presented with opportunities, and we need to weigh what’s best for the team moving forward.”
Ultimately, Boone expressed optimism, stating, “It’s a lengthy season. This might feel tricky currently, but there are numerous opportunities ahead. In fact, our depth is greater than ever. There’s real competition for genuine spots and roles that hasn’t been seen for parts of the year.”
