In Jacksonville, Florida, a police officer, along with a team of colleagues, successfully convinced a distressed man perched on the edge of a bridge—about 200 feet above the St. Johns River—not to jump.
Body camera footage from April 12 on the Dames Point Bridge captures Officer Antonio Richardson reaching out to the man, emphasizing both faith in God and in a brighter future for him.
“No matter what you’re experiencing, you can overcome it,” Richardson’s voice is heard in the video.
“Now listen. Just listen. You will get through this.”
Richardson, who also serves as a pastor, called on a higher power for support.
“Let’s talk… You believe in prayer, I know that… Touch my hand. I’m praying with you,” he encourages.
The dialogue unfolded over the span of 40 minutes.
He remarked, “If you jump, you’re going to hurt someone else. They will feel just as you do now… We need to break this cycle.”
Eventually, the man stepped back from the ledge and moved toward the officer, who then wrapped an arm around him. Other officers joined to assist as well.
This group of police not only saved a life but did so while putting themselves at risk.
For comparison, the New York City Police Department’s Emergency Services Division usually secures their rescue personnel in harnesses for safety.
In this situation, one officer reached out his hand, and the man took it; the officer brought him to safety and shared an emotional embrace.
Richardson mentioned on a Friday program that he didn’t initially plan to be part of the rescue effort.
“I was just there to manage traffic,” he explained. “Then, some colleagues who knew my background as a pastor asked me to speak with him… There was no script… I really didn’t want to see him jump.”
“I just had this feeling that God was going to save his life, and He did,” he said.
The officer has over three decades of experience in ministry.
Richardson shared that after the situation was resolved, he went to his patrol car, called his wife, and “cried like a baby.”
This incident illustrates that even as police confront the darker sides of humanity, they still experience the profound impacts of their work.
