Caitlin Clark ended her own WNBA Rookie of the Year celebration

A new book might shift the perspective on a contentious aspect of Caitlin Clark’s career.

In 2024, she was celebrated as the WNBA’s Rookie of the Year. The announcement came through a phone call from commissioner Cathy Engelbert. This year, though, her successor, Paige Bueckers, received her honor in a far more public way during “The Jennifer Hudson Show.”

This disparity in recognition sparked dissatisfaction among Clark’s supporters. However, in Christine Brennan’s book, *On Her Game: Caitlin Clark and the Revolution in Women’s Sports*, it appears that Clark’s own choices may have contributed to the quieter celebration of her achievement.

As WNBA spokesman Ron Howard reveals in the book, Clark declined a larger presentation for the award. At that time, the Fever were deep in a playoff series against the Connecticut Sun.

Howard noted that he had proposed doing press events in Indianapolis after the Fever’s season. He shared a text from September 16, 2025, stating, “Both the team and her agent turned down the offer… It was tough to arrange while the team was in Connecticut, but we then suggested an event in Indianapolis, which was also declined.” He also mentioned a chance to speak with her on *Good Morning America*, which was not taken.

Representatives from Clark and the Fever have chosen not to comment on the matter.

Fans have voiced their concerns over the WNBA’s treatment of Clark, whether it’s about calls during games or her overall marketing. There’s no denying that Clark is a significant figure in women’s basketball, having played a crucial role in elevating the league’s profile.

After a challenging season where she played just 13 games due to injuries, she’s now ready to kick off the 2026 season in good health.
