DeSantis Signs Redrawn Congressional Map in Florida
Florida’s Republican Governor, Ron DeSantis, has officially signed a revised congressional map, which is anticipated to bolster the Republican representation in the state.
The freshly drawn boundaries, created by the governor’s team and green-lighted by the Florida Legislature, are set to secure 24 seats for Republicans. This is an increase from the previous 20-8 split favoring Republicans over Democrats following the last election.
“Signed, sealed and delivered,” DeSantis announced on social media.
However, this redistricting move, potentially allowing Republicans to gain four additional House seats in the upcoming November 2026 midterm elections, is already under scrutiny and may face legal challenges. Democrats have raised concerns over alleged partisan gerrymandering.
This mid-decade redistricting follows a national effort initiated last year by former President Donald Trump, who urged Republican-controlled states to revise their congressional districts.
Proponents argue that the new boundaries are legally valid, yet the Florida Democratic Party, alongside several progressive organizations, has filed a lawsuit. They claim that the map is an unconstitutional partisan gerrymander that infringes upon state laws.
“We will not back down and condone Ron DeSantis’ violations of the Florida Constitution. This is unconstitutional and breaches the Florida Fair District Amendment of 2010. The fight is just beginning,” stated Nikki Fried, Chair of the Florida Democratic Party.
“While courts may have rewritten federal law, they cannot alter Florida’s Constitution. Florida Democrats will utilize every resource at our disposal to challenge these illegitimate maps and thwart this power grab,” Fried added.
“We want every voter in this state to know: Florida Democrats are committed to safeguarding your rights while Washington weakens your protections.”
