Police search for former Special Forces veteran linked to wife’s shooting

Search for Fugitive in Rural Tennessee

Federal and state law enforcement are actively pursuing a military-trained suspect in rural Tennessee, wanted for allegedly shooting his wife and then fleeing into the nearby woods.

The suspect, identified as Craig Berry, 44, disappeared early Sunday after allegedly shooting his wife during what authorities describe as a domestic dispute. The Stewart County Sheriff’s Office indicates that Berry is a former Special Forces veteran, possessing advanced survival skills.

Berry is wanted for attempted second-degree murder. According to reports, officers were called to the scene along Old Paris Highway around 1:30 a.m. Paramedics took the victim to a hospital, though her current condition remains undisclosed.

Berry reportedly fled into the woods before officers could arrive. The search area has expanded significantly, covering challenging terrain along the Tennessee-Kentucky border.

Authorities have indicated that Berry was armed with at least one handgun and might have more ammunition, classifying him as extremely dangerous. His background in special forces raises particular concerns for the search teams, as he is familiar with the terrain and skilled in survival tactics.

“He’s very familiar with the area,” noted Sheriff Gray, adding that Berry was spotted on a trail camera in camouflage clothing.

As the search intensified, Berry was last tracked by K-9 units near River Trace Road, but there’s uncertainty about whether he remains in that area.

The escalating search has involved multiple agencies, including the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and U.S. Marshals Service.

Authorities are aware that Berry may attempt to blend in by wearing camouflage and moving through wooded regions. Descriptions paint him as physically fit and capable of navigating through difficult landscapes; he is also believed to be a strong swimmer and diver.

Strangely, investigators have noted Berry does not seem to use a phone or any electronic communications, complicating tracking efforts. There’s also speculation he might have received assistance from others following the incident.

As the sheriff’s department adjusts its approach to focus more on specific leads rather than wide area searches, they are urging the public to stay alert. Residents are encouraged to lock their doors, report any suspicious activity, and check their security cameras for potential sightings of Berry.

The sheriff’s office reiterated that they currently have no indications that Berry has left the area. They are advising locals to avoid confrontations, calling 911 if he is seen.
