Nicholas Brendon’s Cause of Death Revealed

Recent findings have disclosed the cause of actor Nicholas Brendon’s death.

The former “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” star passed away on March 20 in Indiana, and autopsy results indicate he succumbed to atherosclerotic hypertensive cardiovascular disease. Acute pneumonia and a prior heart attack also played a part, as shared by Page Six.

It’s noted that the cause of death was attributed to natural causes, primarily a 90% blockage in the right coronary artery.

Putnam County Coroner Todd Zeiner reported that Brendon’s longtime friend and manager, Theresa Fortier, discovered him and subsequently called for help.

His family had previously announced that Brendon “passed away in his sleep from natural causes” at the age of 54, highlighting that he was widely recognized for his roles as an actor.

They noted, “In recent years, Nicky had found a passion for painting and art, and he loved sharing his enthusiasm with family, friends, and fans.”

Brendon was described as “passionate, sensitive, and constantly creative.” His family remarked that his artwork reflected his true self.

They added, “It’s well known that Nicholas faced challenges in his life, but he was on medication and receiving treatment to address his issues. At the time of his passing, he was optimistic about the future.”

In their closing remarks, the family requested “privacy” to mourn and commemorate a man who exhibited strength, imagination, and heart. They also expressed gratitude to those who have offered support.

Zeiner revealed that Brendon lived alone and was discovered by a friend who had stayed overnight. The friend found him in a sleeping position, and although medical personnel pronounced him dead, there were no signs of foul play.

Brendon had a tumultuous history, having undergone several rehab stints for substance abuse and faced various legal troubles, including an arrest in 2021 for prescription fraud.

He had recently been dealing with significant health challenges, having been diagnosed with Cauda Equina Syndrome following a serious fall in 2021, which required multiple spinal surgeries and led to partial paralysis.

He experienced two heart incidents, including a heart attack, and was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. In a 2023 Instagram post, he expressed that managing his medical needs felt just as mentally draining as his physical ailments.

Following Brendon’s death, several of his co-stars from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” paid homage to him on social media. Sarah Michelle Gellar, who portrayed Buffy Summers, shared a nostalgic photo and quoted Brendon’s character, Xander Harris, reflecting on the challenges of not being in the spotlight. She expressed her comfort in knowing he is at peace now.
