College coach doubts Fernando Mendoza's skills

Concerns Surround Fernando Mendoza’s NFL Future

Not everyone is on the Fernando Mendoza bandwagon when it comes to his potential as an NFL player.

A college coach who faced off against the Raiders’ new quarterback during his time at Cal recently shared his thoughts. He admitted that he never anticipated the 22-year-old would achieve Pro Bowl-level success.

“He makes solid decisions,” the coach remarked, “but I just don’t see him having the traits typically needed for the NFL.”

According to the coach, most of Mendoza’s standout moments involved back-shoulder throws, which he feels might not translate well to the professional level. “Those plays are not going to cut it in the NFL,” he added. “His receivers often helped him look better than he really was. In the NFL, those throws are more precise and targeted.”

Mendoza kicked off his college football journey at the University of California in 2022 and took his first start with the Golden Bears in 2023. After participating in 20 games over the next two seasons, he made a move to Indiana, where he had a phenomenal 2025 season.

Last season, he notably completed 72% of his passes, accumulating 3,535 yards with 41 touchdowns and only six interceptions. He also secured the Heisman Trophy along with a national championship.

On April 23, the Raiders selected him as the first overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Another college coach, who preferred to remain anonymous, echoed some of the previous concerns, but his outlook on Mendoza seemed a bit brighter. “He had plenty of support and assistance, so it’ll be interesting to see how he performs,” the second coach noted. “I’m actually quite impressed with him. People might not want to hear it, but he definitely has something special.”

Only time will tell how this situation will unfold. Mendoza is unlikely to see the field for the Raiders immediately, especially with veteran Kirk Cousins signed for the current season.
