Mike Brown staying focused despite James Dolan's NBA Finals expectations

Knicks Coach Mike Brown Unfazed by Pressure

Pressure? That idea doesn’t phase Mike Brown at all.

Even after owner James Dolan insisted in January that the Knicks “absolutely” needed to reach the NBA Finals—and really should win—Brown’s message remains clear. “People talk about a sense of mission. But I’m just coaching to win,” he mentioned Tuesday. “What others say doesn’t matter to me. Honestly, I’ll be disappointed if we don’t reach the finals and get a shot at victory.”

After a solid four-year playoff stretch and a convincing win over the 76ers in their Eastern Conference semifinal opener, the Knicks seem to have a good shot at making the finals this year.

The team is hitting its stride, becoming the first in NBA history to win three playoff games by at least 25 points.

Interestingly, when the Knicks parted ways with coach Tom Thibodeau last spring—after a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2000—Brown wasn’t initially their top pick.

Despite missing out on a few targets, like Jason Kidd, they eventually landed on Brown.

The path hasn’t been without its complications. In the first round, they managed to beat the Hawks 2-1 and have since dominated most of their matchups. It’s worth noting that Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns had somewhat lackluster regular seasons but have turned up their performance in the playoffs. Brown deserves credit for bringing out the best in this group.

Reflecting on his journey, Brown said, “I was really intrigued by the players and just the idea of being in New York, calling Madison Square Garden my home court. Being around the fans has been amazing. I’ve known team president Leon Rose for years, and he’s just a fantastic person.”

Despite the optimism, he remains cautious. “The mission and everything else is what I want, but who knows what will happen?” he added. He isn’t ready to proclaim this group as a sure victory; while he’s pleased with their current form, he still sees potential for growth.

This calm demeanor, which has served the Knicks well, was particularly effective during the series against the Hawks when other teams were panicking.

“He doesn’t let outside noise affect him. Every day, he’s focused on making this team better,” said Josh Hart. “He communicates well with us, takes our feedback seriously, and asks questions. That kind of communication really helps everyone in the organization work well together, even amidst all the surrounding chaos.”
