Incident of Racial Abuse at Premier League Match
A soccer fan in England was taken into custody on Monday after allegedly racially abusing Manchester City’s Antoine Semenyo during a Premier League match against Everton.
Merseyside Police reported that a 71-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of committing a racially aggravated public order offense.
The police noted that the arrest followed reports from “supporters and stewards who witnessed racial slurs being directed at them” from Everton fans.
The match, part of Matchweek 35, was held at Liverpool’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Everton issued a statement on Tuesday condemning the man’s actions, insisting that “racism and discrimination in every form is completely unacceptable.”
They further emphasized that such behavior has no place in stadiums, sports, or society at large. The club stated its commitment to work with authorities during the investigation and expressed a zero-tolerance approach toward such conduct.
The suspect has been released on conditional bail. He is now prohibited from being within a mile of the playing field for four hours before the kickoff, throughout the match, and for four hours afterward.
Manchester City expressed gratitude to Everton and the police for their rapid response to the incident.
Unfortunately, this episode wasn’t the only racial abuse directed at members of Manchester City this week. The club announced following their 3-3 draw that defender Marc Guehi had also faced racial insults online.
In their statement, Manchester City expressed their “incredibly disappointed” feelings regarding the “series of vile and racist posts” targeting Guehi on social media the previous night.
They reaffirmed their unwavering support for both Antoine and Marc, reiterating that discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated in their games.
This isn’t the first instance of such abuse for Semenyo; he previously reported being racially abused during Bournemouth’s opening match of this season against Liverpool.
