Clifford the Big Red Dog Returns to PBS Kids

Parents concerned about the influence of modern media on their kids will be pleased to hear some nostalgic news. The beloved character, Clifford the Big Red Dog, is making a comeback in a new animated series on PBS Kids. This revival by 9 Stories Media Group promises to bring Clifford to a fresh audience, with a 26-episode series debuting in 2027, which could be a fantastic opportunity to introduce kids to more wholesome content.

The series will feature 11-minute episodes designed to teach preschoolers essential social skills. It aims to help children understand problem-solving, making friends, and engaging with their community. In a time when negative messages and online hazards are prevalent, this new take on Clifford could be a welcome breath of fresh air for families.

For families worried about violent video games, an interactive Clifford game will also launch alongside the series, providing another safe option for children.

“Clifford has been a staple for kids and families for years, and we’re thrilled to reintroduce him to PBS Kids audiences across the nation,” shared Sarah DeWitt, senior vice president and general manager of PBS Kids Education. She emphasized the importance of helping children develop the skills they need to build relationships, which are crucial for their success in life.

Clifford first appeared in a book by Norman Bridwell, published by Scholastic in 1963, and has since sold over 135 million copies in multiple languages, even inspiring a feature film in 2021.

Iole Lucchese, executive producer of Clifford and Scholastic’s chief strategy officer, mentioned that this new series will enhance Clifford’s charming traits through innovative storytelling, offering viewers exciting new experiences while fostering the character’s growth.

Vince Commisso, president and CEO of 9 Story Media Group, highlighted their fresh approach, saying they’re focusing on a comedic angle that enhances Clifford’s fun nature, while keeping the warmth and emotional connections that fans cherish.

In addition to Clifford’s return, PBS Kids will also launch “Super Why’s Comic Book Adventures,” a spin-off of the popular series, set to premiere on October 5, 2026.
