Police officers in Washington, D.C. suspended for reportedly altering crime statistics

Judge halts Trump's plan to send National Guard troops to Portland

DC Police Scandal Unfolds Amid Crime Statistics Investigation

Nearly a year ago, President Trump raised concerns about the potential for “false crime numbers” in the District of Columbia, an issue that has now come to the forefront as the National Guard was deployed to the capital.

The Metropolitan Police Department is currently facing serious allegations, with 13 officers placed on administrative leave and some already dismissed, as an investigation into possible statistical manipulation progresses. Interim Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll confirmed the ongoing inquiry, stating, “Our Home Office has completed an investigation into the crime report.” However, the Metropolitan Police Department did not respond to requests for further comment.

Reports suggest that high-ranking officials, including assistant commissioners and district commanders, are also under investigation.

Investigation by the FBI Reveals Misclassified Cases

Trump faced significant backlash from local officials and Democratic lawmakers after he tweeted about the crime statistics, claiming they were inflated to give a distorted sense of safety in Washington. He insisted that Washington was not, in fact, the safest city until the National Guard’s intervention.

Fox News Digital reached out to the White House for comments but received a statement from House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer. Comer asserted that the recent firings are a direct outcome of the committee’s efforts to highlight the police department’s attempts to artificially lower crime rates.

Several Democratic lawmakers, including those from the district, condemned Trump’s actions. Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton labeled the president’s deployment of federal forces as an “aggressive” and excessive response.

The Fallout from Trump’s Law Enforcement Actions

District legislators, all of whom are Democrats, strongly criticized Trump’s interventions, calling them misaligned with the community’s needs. District Attorney Brian Schwalb has even filed a lawsuit against federal authorities, claiming an “unlawful attempted takeover.” Schwalb argued that the actions were infringing on the district’s autonomy and potentially jeopardized public safety.

A month later, in a pointed response, Senator Charles Schumer expressed his disapproval of Trump’s actions, calling them “outrageous” and stating that Congress would never support extending the National Guard’s role in the city.

Amid this contentious atmosphere, the union president of the Metropolitan Police Department expressed support for the investigation, emphasizing concerns about a “toxic culture” that has led to many cases remaining unresolved. He noted that critical forensic processes were neglected, allowing dangerous criminals to evade capture while the public was misled with inaccurate crime statistics.

Fox News Digital has sought comments from various officials, including Schwalb, Holmes-Norton, and Schumer, and plans to follow up on the matter as developments unfold.
