DNA collection by ICE solves a ten-year-old serial rape investigation in Indiana

Undocumented Immigrant Indicted for Long-Running Rape Spree

Authorities have announced that an undocumented immigrant has been charged with 30 counts related to a decade-long series of rapes in Marion County, Indiana. This revelation came after DNA analysis conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) uncovered the case.

Leonel Catalan Torreblanca now faces serious legal repercussions, including a Level 1 felony, which could see him sentenced to as much as 50 years in prison, according to Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears during a recent press conference.

The assaults began in March 2013, with the most recent occurrence recorded in January 2024. Law enforcement had long suspected these cases were interlinked, as DNA profiles identified at various crime scenes were connected in the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). However, they previously lacked a match to a known individual.

Authorities indicated that Torreblanca had previously evaded detection in this database, having only one minor criminal record for a DUI.

A significant breakthrough happened recently when Torreblanca’s DNA profile was entered into CODIS through ICE’s collection efforts, leading to a match with the evidence linked to the crimes.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Tim O’Malley confirmed that Torreblanca is in the U.S. illegally, although officials have been unable to determine his exact country of origin. The FBI quickly verified his identity on April 22, and the Violent Crimes Unit from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police tracked him down and arrested him at a relative’s residence shortly after.

FBI Director Kash Patel commended the collaborative efforts of the FBI team and partners, praising their use of advanced DNA technology to bring the suspect to justice.

Torreblanca is currently being held on standard bonds. It’s unclear whether ICE has filed immigration charges against him as well.

During the conference, Prosecutor Mears lauded the “incredible strength and resilience” of the survivors who participated in the case, revisiting their traumatic experiences to help secure these charges. Authorities mentioned that Torreblanca possibly resided near the location of the assaults, suggesting there may be other victims or additional cases that lack sufficient DNA evidence.

As of now, the Department of Homeland Security and ICE have not responded to requests for further information regarding the case.
