Changes in district boundaries following the Supreme Court ruling may benefit the GOP in upcoming elections.

As the November 2026 midterm elections approach, the redistricting process across the U.S. has turned into a fierce battle between Democrats and Republicans.

Both parties initiated their redistricting plans in July 2025, but a recent Supreme Court ruling could allow Republicans to potentially gain up to 14 seats.

This landmark decision set a precedent by declaring Louisiana’s previous redistricting efforts as unconstitutional, particularly for racial gerrymandering aimed at creating majority-black districts.

Following this, there’s a growing possibility for redistricting in several southern states, which includes Florida, Louisiana, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and South Carolina, thus potentially opening more seats for Republicans.

Currently, Republicans have a slim majority in the House of Representatives, with 217 seats compared to the Democrats’ 212. Former California Republican Kevin Kiley holds one seat, leaving five vacancies that are expected to be filled in time for the elections on November 3.

If Republicans manage to grab 14 additional seats, it would significantly bolster their chances of maintaining control of the House. According to 270towin.com, the current situation shows Democrats with 212 safe or likely seats, Republicans with 205, and 18 seats still up for grabs in the 435-member Congress.

“That’s definitely promising,” remarked Adam Geller, a Republican strategist. “But it’s probably best to hold off on getting too excited until we see where everything lands and once the new districts get certified.”

It’s worth noting that the political landscape seems to be shifting daily.

States like California, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, and Texas have already ratified new congressional maps, with some congressional adjustments occurring in Utah due to a lawsuit filed by voting rights advocates.

Now, let’s dive into how things have really shifted in light of the Supreme Court’s verdict on the Voting Rights Act.

Predicted Republican Victory

Louisiana

The court’s ruling declared Louisiana’s congressional maps unconstitutional due to racial gerrymandering. Consequently, Republican Governor Jeff Landry postponed the House primary election to redraw the electoral maps, considering demographic shifts. Currently, Republicans occupy four of the six House seats, and Landry aims to reclaim more from Democrats.

Tennessee

Tennessee’s Republican Governor Bill Lee convened a special legislative session to redraw the legislative map, emphasizing the need for accurate representation of Tennessee voters. He is also aiming for the Democratic-held House seat in Memphis.

Alabama

In Alabama, Republican Governor Kay Ivey also called for a special legislative session to adjust the electoral maps to favor Republicans across all House districts. The revised maps could potentially remove two seats from Democrats’ control.

Florida

Meanwhile, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a new congressional map allowing for a possible flip of four of the eight Democratic-held House seats. With 28 seats in total, DeSantis has modified 21 districts to benefit his party.

Texas

Last month, the Supreme Court sanctioned a new congressional map for Texas after a lower court had earlier rejected it. Republicans currently maintain 24 seats, while Democrats hold 13, with aspirations to gain five more through the new redistricting.

North Carolina

In North Carolina, a newly approved map could enable Republicans to seize control of 11 out of the 14 House seats.

Washington, D.C.

In what might be the boldest proposal yet, Republicans in D.C. have introduced a bill to reclaim land historically taken by Virginia, with intentions that seem designed to reconfigure political alignments after Democratic gains in Virginia elections.

Predicted Democratic Party Victory

California

As a reaction to Texas’ redistricting, California Governor Gavin Newsom introduced an amendment to modify the state’s congressional map to bolster Democratic representation. Although the bill passed last November, experts believe the recent Supreme Court ruling could severely impact its effectiveness.

Virginia

Voters in Virginia recently approved a redistricting plan that may create four additional Democratic seats. However, there’s pushback from Republicans, who claim the law wasn’t properly followed during the referendum process.

New York

Not every redistricting effort has been seamless. Recently, the Supreme Court intervened to prevent New York Democrats from altering the redistricting of Staten Island, home to the city’s lone Republican House seat. This has prompted discussions among state lawmakers about constitutional amendments concerning partisan gerrymandering.

Maryland

Governor Wes Moore’s proposed redistricting map aimed at enhancing Democratic chances faced rejection from the Democratic-controlled legislature, fearing legal challenges.

Illinois

Just last week, the Illinois House paused an amendment about racially influenced redistricting following the upheaval from the Supreme Court ruling. Republicans currently hold three out of 17 congressional seats in the state.

Utah

In Utah, court rulings have now opened the door for potential Democratic gains after rejecting a previously drawn Republican map.

Redistricting is typically a decennial event following the census to reflect shifts in population. Initially, only Ohio was set for redistricting in 2026.

“It feels like redistricting is happening every few minutes rather than every ten years,” remarked David Wasserman, an election analyst at the Cook Political Report. “If one side doesn’t seize the opportunity, the other certainly will.”

The push for redistricting started in Texas last year after former President Trump urged the Republican Party to amend voting maps to solidify a Republican advantage during the upcoming midterm elections.
