Thunder Outsmart Lakers in Game 1 of Playoffs
In Oklahoma City, the Lakers started strong, but the Thunder proved to be the tougher team, securing a win in Game 1 of their playoff series.
With Game 2 looming at Paycom Center, the Lakers are under pressure to improve. Falling behind 0-2 before heading back to Los Angeles for Games 3 and 4 on the weekend isn’t a position they want to be in.
“At the end of the day, it’s the playoffs. It’s, well, win or go home,” noted Jackson Hayes. “We need to come in with urgency and be ready to fight.”
Here are three key adjustments the Lakers should consider before Game 2:
Enhance Offensive Strategy Against OKC’s Defense
With Luka Doncic sidelined, the Thunder adapted their defensive tactics. In Game 1, they utilized a drop coverage strategy, which caught the Lakers off guard since their regular-season approach to pick-and-rolls has changed.
The Lakers’ difficulty against the Thunder’s drop coverage was evident throughout Game 1. It’s been a recurring issue for them this season, irrespective of their opponents. As the game unfolded, effective plays like post-ups became less frequent.
Though their defense kept them competitive, the Lakers still need to be more precise offensively. Coach JJ Reddick acknowledged, “We need to be better. That falls on me to ensure our game plan is clear. We had too many possessions where we didn’t utilize the corners effectively.”
Adjust Austin Reeves’ Playing Time
Austin Reeves had a tough outing in Game 1, hitting only 3-of-16 shots and missing all five from beyond the arc. He did manage six assists and five rebounds but turned the ball over four times. For the Lakers to compete against the Thunder, they need a stronger performance from him.
Reddick stressed the importance of having “Austin be Austin.” He acknowledged that after being sidelined, it’s a challenge to regain peak condition for playoffs. Shortening his shifts could be a strategy to help manage his energy, particularly since he just returned from a significant injury. Reeves has struggled with shooting since coming back, hitting just 2-of-17 three-pointers in recent games.
Refine Defensive Rotations
Tightening their defensive rotations, especially when double-teaming or managing NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, could greatly help the Lakers. Understanding who to lock down and who to leave open must become a higher priority as they prepare for Game 2.
