Trump and Jeffries in Heated Exchange Over Violence Claims
President Donald Trump has intensified his ongoing conflict with leading Democrats, accusing House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York of provoking a recent assassination attempt.
Trump contended that Jeffries suggested he ought to face arrest for promoting a “war” against the Republican Party, particularly in light of an incident that occurred just days before the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in April.
“This lunatic, Hakeem ‘Low IQ’ Jeffries, should be indicted for inciting violence!” Trump expressed on social media, adding a photo of Jeffries holding a sign that read “Maximum War.” He also shared an image with his aide James Blair and a picture of Cole Allen, the individual accused of attacking a Secret Service checkpoint shortly after.
Trump’s post prompted him to ask his followers, “Should Hakeem Jeffries be prosecuted for inciting violence?”
A spokesperson for Jeffries responded by referring to a social media statement where the top Democrat dismissed Trump’s comments as “another insane rant” and critiqued him for being out of touch with the realities many Americans face, such as rising gas and food prices.
In April, amid a backlash from Republicans for his “maximum war” rhetoric, Jeffries stood firm, saying, “I don’t care about your criticism.” He defended his phrase by stating it was originally used by a White House official to intimidate Democrats regarding gerrymandering situations.
“The words ‘maximum war, anytime, anywhere’ came from the White House when they began this redistricting battle in the summer of 2025, and now it’s trending,” Jeffries asserted at a press conference. He has consistently condemned political violence but has remained unapologetic about his strong language.
In a recent interview, he emphasized the importance of lawmakers setting an appropriate example amidst growing concerns over political violence, saying, “Regardless of our ideological perspective, we all love America and we all want to make sure this country is the best it can be.”
