Lakers lose to Thunder 125-107 in Game 2 in Oklahoma City

OKLAHOMA CITY — Lakers Stumble Again

The Lakers found themselves in a familiar position, yet again falling short, losing 125-107 to the Thunder in Game 2 at Paycom Center.

It seemed like they were their own worst enemies, with 21 turnovers leading to 26 points for Oklahoma City.

There were also those 17 second-chance points they allowed, ruining what could have been a promising stretch of solid half-court defense.

Despite Austin Reeves rebounding from a not-so-great Game 1—putting up playoff career-high 31 points and six assists—the outcome was still marred by the Lakers’ errors.

LeBron James contributed with 23 points and six assists. Rui Hachimura and Luke Kennard together added 26 points, yet the Lakers let a solid shooting night (50% from the field and 37.9% from three) go to waste.

Chet Holmgren stood out for the Thunder, scoring 22 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander matched that with 22 points, while Ajay Mitchell added 20 points and six assists. Jared McCain chipped in 18 points off the bench.

What It Means

The Lakers currently lead the best-of-seven series 2-0.

Historically, teams with home-court advantage hold a significant edge, boasting a 221-19 record in playoff series after leading 2-0 since the 1984 playoff format change.

Turning Point

A pivotal moment came at 10:34 in the third quarter when Gilgeous-Alexander picked up his fourth foul and received a flagrant penalty. Reeves capitalized with two free throws, and a technical free throw after Alex Caruso was hit with a technical, granting the Lakers a 66-61 lead.

Typically, this scenario favors the opponent when a reigning MVP has to sit for a long stretch. But for the Lakers, it was the opposite—they collapsed, getting outscored 32-14 in the final 10 and a half minutes of the third quarter.

Jared McCain, Holmgren, and Mitchell came together for 23 points during that span, clearly outpacing the Lakers, who managed only 22.

MVP: Ajay Mitchell

The second-year guard continues to impress, making a significant impact in the playoffs and playing a crucial role in the Thunder’s Game 2 win, particularly in the third quarter.

Game Status: 12

This number represents how many points the Thunder outscored the Lakers while Gilgeous-Alexander sat on the bench. The Lakers had difficulties in Game 1 against the Thunder as well when he was out for parts of the match.

To the Next

Looking ahead, Game 3 between the Lakers and Thunder is set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Crypto.com Arena.
