Mayor of Georgia dismisses whole police department after making his wife unhappy

Georgia Mayor Dismisses Entire Police Force After Controversy

The mayor of a small town in Georgia made headlines recently when he terminated the entire police department, reportedly due to the backlash from comments made by officers about his wife. The mayor, Ron Shinnick, acted swiftly, disbanding the Cohutta Police Department and firing all ten officers earlier this week.

This decision followed what were described as “inappropriate comments” made by officers on Facebook regarding their spouses. A firm notice stating that the police department had been dissolved was posted on the station’s door early Wednesday morning.

It’s unclear whether the officers were informed ahead of time or if they discovered their firings upon arriving for work. Shinnick, when questioned about the situation, indicated that while the fired officers would receive their pay, it was time for a change in leadership.

The issues began when several officials filed complaints concerning Pam Shinnick, the mayor’s wife, who had previously been dismissed for allegedly fostering a “hostile work environment.” Despite her firing, she seemed to retain access to sensitive information and continued working for the town.

In a joint press conference, Mayor Shinnick, Police Chief Greg Fowler, and City Attorney Brian Rayburn initially shared optimism about resolving the complaints. However, within a week, all officers had lost their jobs. One of the dismissed officers, Sergeant John Johnson, expressed disbelief, asserting that the situation stemmed from a personal vendetta against them, while fellow officer Jeremy May mentioned that they had been reassured their roles were secure even after voicing their concerns about the mayor’s wife.

May highlighted the official communication from the town attorney that guaranteed no job insecurity. Now, the fired officers are required to return all department property, and policing duties in the town will be assumed by the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office.

While the mayor has pointed to the officers’ online comments as the reason for their dismissal, the exact nature of those remarks remains unclear.
