California Gubernatorial Debate Sparks Controversy
During a recent California gubernatorial debate, Republican candidate Chad Bianco suggested that Democratic candidate Katie Porter might benefit from his advice on motherhood. This remark prompted audible reactions from the audience, a mixture of gasps and groans, amidst a heated discussion regarding the state’s policies protecting illegal immigrants.
Porter and Bianco were part of seven gubernatorial candidates who participated in the debate aired on NBC LA and Telemundo 52. It took place just weeks before California’s upcoming jungle primary on June 2, 2026.
The exchange became particularly tense when the host directed a question about illegal immigrant protection laws to Porter. She emphasized the need for strict enforcement to stop “crazy cowboys” from taking matters into their own hands.
Bianco interjected with a remark directed toward Porter, stating, “Tell that to the crazy mother who lost her child.”
In response, Porter shot back, “I don’t need a lecture from you about being a mother.” Bianco attempted to lighten the atmosphere with a joke, but it only drew more reactions from the crowd.
Both candidates have faced their share of scrutiny during the campaign. A resurfaced video of Porter yelling at a staff member, along with troubling details from his divorce, has raised doubts about his temperament for leadership in California.
Porter has three children with her ex-husband, Matthew Hoffman. Their marriage ended in separation in 2013, with Hoffman alleging verbal and physical abuse in court documents. At one point, he claimed Porter even poured a bowl of hot mashed potatoes over his head. Despite these allegations, Porter has shared custody of their children.
Additionally, allegations emerged against Porter’s ex-boyfriend, who threatened to contact Child Protective Services regarding her parenting. However, there has been no indication that she lost custody. In fact, Porter obtained a temporary restraining order during a tumultuous relationship with this ex-boyfriend.
On the other hand, Bianco, who has a long career in law enforcement and currently serves as sheriff, has faced criticism over his previous affiliation with the far-right group Oath Keepers, though he claims to have left the group in 2014.
Fox News Digital has sought comments from both candidates regarding these developments.
