CBS Fact-Check Supports Spencer Pratt's Statement That Karen Bass Is Not Honest

Fact-Check of LA Mayoral Debate Highlights

CBS News evaluated two notable exchanges from the recent Los Angeles mayoral debate, which support Republican candidate Spencer Pratt’s assertion that incumbent Democratic Mayor Karen Bass is, in fact, misleading voters.

Here’s a summarized account of a discussion highlighting the first fact-check, concerning the mayor’s handling of the 2025 Palisades fire, which tragically destroyed nearly 7,000 buildings and resulted in 12 fatalities.

Spencer Pratt: Many people discuss climate change and severe winds. In the Pacific Palisades, the maximum wind speed was never higher than 40 miles per hour. I don’t think it even hit 47 miles per hour the first six hours.

The essence here is that Bass is attributing blame for the fires primarily to climate change.

Karen Bass: His comments on wind speeds are entirely incorrect. If that were true, flights would have been possible. Winds hitting nearly 160 miles per hour would indeed ground planes.

Pratt: Right. She mentioned me. It’s hard to believe how dishonest she is. If you look it up, you’ll find 40 weather stations confirming the winds stayed below 40 miles per hour, yet she references the Altadena fire.

Moderator: I need to step in here. Let’s keep the language clean.

Pratt: Sure, but why won’t you say my name? She lied… and it’s time for honesty.

CBS News provided this fact-check:

According to weather data for my report, initial wind speeds during the early phases of the fire were under 60 miles per hour. Planes were indeed flying at that time, and conditions deteriorated later that evening. This detail is crucial because the early moments of a wildfire are often key to managing its spread.

This assessment is accurate. The fire was first logged at 10:30 a.m. California time, with a helicopter starting water drops shortly thereafter, and a plane arriving within an hour.

Later on, Bass insisted that her being in Africa during the fire wasn’t significant, implying that she could have handled the situation from Ghana just as she would have from Los Angeles.

This claim is equally misleading. CBS found that Bass 1) departed the country knowing there was a high chance of fire, 2) was unattainable at a vital moment, 3) left the fire chief uninformed of her whereabouts, and 4) her staff appeared to mislead through social media, suggesting she was present in Los Angeles, complicating communications.

Interviews indicated that Mayor Bass was aware of the severe weather before her trip. Emergency communications indicated she was merely “out of state.” While she was abroad, her office continued to post content on social media that gave the impression she was still in Los Angeles. During this chaotic period, the fire chief was initially unaware of her location in Ghana. Even after being briefed on the fire’s escalation, Bass attended a reception in Ghana and did not respond for over an hour to Los Angeles officials seeking help during a critical phase of the fire’s spread.

But here’s the kicker. I hope I’m mistaken…

This might not matter much since Los Angeles seems to be facing an uphill battle. Did Karen Bass abandon the city knowing there was a serious fire risk?

Irrelevant, because she’s a Democrat.

Is Bass displaying not only significant incompetence but also a troubling indifference to human lives during a crisis (that cocktail party incident)?

Once again, it doesn’t matter; she’s a Democrat.

What about Bass not approving rebuild permits in Pacific Palisades?

Still irrelevant, since she’s a Democrat. Is she really being untruthful about all this? It doesn’t matter; she’s a Democrat.

Spencer Pratt could be a strong candidate. Is Bass genuinely an ineffective mayor?

Ultimately irrelevant, because she’s a Democrat.

I hope I’m wrong.
