Trump Announces Ceasefire Between Ukraine and Russia
Former President Donald Trump recently shared that a ceasefire agreement has been reached between Ukraine and Russia, which he proposed. This arrangement comes alongside a significant prisoner swap involving 1,000 individuals from each nation.
According to a post on Truth Social, Trump stated the ceasefire is set to begin on May 9 and last for three days. He expressed gratitude that Presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy have come to this agreement. He emphasized that talks to conclude this major conflict, considered the most significant since World War II, are progressing daily.
Trump noted that while Russia celebrates Victory Day—commemorating its triumph over Nazi Germany—Ukraine shares a similar sentiment, as its history is deeply intertwined with the events of World War II. He remarked, “This request came directly from me.” The deal aims to facilitate the safe observance of commemorations without concern for renewed hostilities.
In a reaction on social media, Zelenskyy expressed appreciation for the proposed ceasefire but also called for assurance from the U.S. that Russia would adhere to the terms. He commented, “Red Square may not be of great importance to us, but the lives of Ukrainian prisoners of war certainly are.” There is hope that this ceasefire could pave the way for a long-term resolution to the ongoing conflict.
Earlier, Zelenskyy had announced a ceasefire, with Russia also indicating willingness for one, although the timelines differed. Estimates of casualties in the war vary widely, with some reports suggesting over 1.2 million Russians involved and Ukrainian losses estimated between 500,000 and 600,000.
