Israeli Soldier’s Controversial Photo Under Investigation
This week, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged that they are looking into a photo circulating online. The image apparently depicts a soldier making light of a Virgin Mary statue by placing a cigarette in its mouth and aiming it toward its face.
The photo was reportedly taken in the southern Lebanese town of Dibir, an area the IDF has been involved with as part of an extensive operation aimed at controlling more of southern Lebanon. This effort is intended to establish a “buffer zone” between Israel and Lebanon. Reports indicate that many Lebanese, particularly indigenous Christians, have been displaced from their homes, allegedly as a result of Israeli actions aimed at countering the Iranian-backed group Hezbollah, which is claimed to have constructed a network of tunnels and arms caches across residential areas.
The humanitarian situation has worsened, as the broader Christian community in Lebanon has been affected. Reports suggest that the image surfaced on social media on Wednesday, initially claimed by Israeli broadcaster KAN to have been taken recently. However, the IDF later stated that it believes the image is several weeks old, which raises questions about its authenticity. Another video supposedly showing similar behavior by soldiers was mentioned, but the IDF had not confirmed its details by the time of reporting.
In May — recognized globally among Catholics as the month dedicated to Mary — the actions depicted would be even more offensive if they indeed occurred this month, as many Catholics celebrate this period with rituals like the May Coronation.
The Israeli military has publicly addressed the uproar, stating that they take these claims quite seriously. Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani commented that the preliminary investigation pointed to the photo being several weeks old. Depending on the findings, disciplined measures could be initiated against the soldier involved.
The IDF has maintained that it respects the freedom of worship and the sanctity of religious sites, stating that operations in southern Lebanon aim to dismantle Hezbollah’s infrastructure without harming civilian properties, including places of worship.
Additionally, IDF representatives reiterated that the conduct exhibited doesn’t align with the values expected of their personnel. The IDF confirmed that the photo was indeed taken in Dibil, which previously experienced another incident involving a soldier disrespecting a Christian symbol by using a hammer on a cross. Following an investigation, that soldier was also sentenced to prison.
Security protocols regarding interactions with religious sites will be reinforced across units, as announced by the military. The IDF has also stated that a new cross has been provided to the town of Dibir, though it differs in size from the original Catholic cross.
Notably, Italian soldiers once displayed a replica of a cross destroyed by the IDF, which the town accepted. In a recent incident, the IDF acknowledged that their soldiers’ actions led to a monastery attack, justifying it by alleging Hezbollah was using the site for militant activities. They insisted that despite claiming no religious symbols indicated it was a sacred space, a new assessment was made due to the identification of religious markings.
