Temporary Alcohol Ban in the Bahamas During Elections
A temporary ban on alcohol sales will take effect in the Bahamas next week, impacting visitors, including cruise passengers. The decision comes ahead of national elections scheduled for Tuesday, May 12th.
The restriction will be in place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on election day, as outlined in a government notice. During this period, the sale of “intoxicating liquor” will be prohibited.
The government’s notice cautions that anyone found selling alcohol during these hours could face legal repercussions under the Business Licensing Act.
This ban applies across all the islands in the Bahamas, including those privately operated by cruise lines. Royal Caribbean confirmed that the restriction will be enforced at its private destination, CocoCay.
Meanwhile, two Royal Caribbean ships, Oasis of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas, are scheduled to dock at CocoCay. However, the cruise line stated that while passengers will be unable to buy alcohol on shore during the ban, drinks will still be available onboard.
A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean emphasized that the company respects and follows local laws in all destinations it serves.
The ban has sparked frustration among holidaymakers. One traveler expressed her disappointment on social media, citing a planned trip to celebrate her 40th wedding anniversary with friends. She mentioned that if she had been aware of the alcohol restrictions earlier, she might have opted for a different itinerary.
Another traveler echoed her sentiments, recalling a previous visit during which staff appeared disheartened and the atmosphere felt subdued due to similar restrictions.
Fox News Digital has reached out to Royal Caribbean for additional comments regarding the situation.
