Major Break in Texas Cold Case
Authorities in Texas recently made significant progress in a nearly 40-year-old cold case. The arrest of death row inmate Bobby Charles Taylor Sr. has been announced.
At 60, Taylor was apprehended in Mexico following advancements in DNA technology that led investigators in Montgomery County, Texas, to this breakthrough.
He is accused of the murder of 16-year-old Deanna Ogg from Porter, Texas. Her body was discovered on September 27, 1986, after she left home around 5 PM, intending to attend a family gathering. Just hours later, children nearby came across her body approximately 11 miles from her starting point, along a logging road north of Houston.
The investigation revealed that she had been sexually assaulted, beaten, and stabbed, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
A man was arrested within a month of the murder and later convicted, but DNA testing eventually proved his innocence.
The case remained cold for almost four decades, but forensic genetic testing led to identifying Taylor, whose DNA had been collected at the crime scene.
In March 2020, Texas Rangers highlighted Ogg’s case in the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative program; the following year, previously unexamined evidence was submitted for better DNA testing and genealogy analysis.
In 2024, Taylor was named a suspect due to these advancements. Investigators then discovered that Taylor was a fugitive from an unrelated felony charge, believed to be hiding in Mexico, according to Montgomery County Sheriff Wesley Doolittle.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, alongside other agencies, worked to address the bail jumping charges. Taylor eventually turned himself in on unrelated felony charges in Mexico City on April 24, 2026.
At a recent press conference, authorities displayed seven mugshots of Taylor from various arrests dating back to 1985. Ogg’s mother was present at the conference, and a letter from her was read aloud. It reflected her deep love and loss: “Deanna wasn’t on this earth for long. She enjoyed her time here. Her love for Jesus and her love for her family lasted a lifetime.”
