Police Officers Shot in Syracuse, New York

Two police officers tragically lost their lives, and a third was wounded in Syracuse, New York, on Saturday. The situation unfolded over four tense hours as a gunman continued to fire at police, forcing nearby residents to evacuate.

Officials stated that the two fallen officers and the three others injured are currently in stable condition. Reports suggest that the confrontation began around 6 a.m. when police were called to a residential area just south of downtown Syracuse, following an incident involving a person injuring a dog with a machete.

In a notice shared on X, Syracuse police indicated that the situation was still “very active” around 2:40 p.m. local time.

Authorities warned that the suspect was firing shots and advised residents to stay sheltered indoors, away from windows, and to avoid the area entirely. They urged the community not to approach the scene.

The neighborhood largely consists of public housing and low-income apartments, complicating the evacuation process. Residents were taken to safety via bus as multiple law enforcement agencies, including the New York State Police and Syracuse SWAT, responded to the situation.

As the investigation continues, Syracuse Police and New York State Police have yet to provide further comments.

This is an ongoing story, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
